Robert Scott brings sustainable chemical free cleaning to the facilities show

4 Jun 2019

At this year’s Facilities Show, Robert Scott, one of the UK’s largest cleaning product manufacturer, is set to showcase the Toucan Eco system which is a sustainable bio-cleaning system that removes the need for 80% of cleaning chemicals while significantly reducing plastic waste and costs for a business.

When it comes to chemical cleaning products, most of us don’t realise just how bad for the environment – and your health – they are proven to be. With millions of us using products of this nature on a daily basis, we are continually exposing ourselves to increased health risks.

Then there’s the waste. In the UK alone, we produce more than 100 million tonnes of waste each year. Lots of this is plastic bottles. We’ve seen what’s happening in our oceans and landfill, and waste plastic from cleaning products is contributing to this problem.

A recent study of 6,000 people has shown that long-term use of chemical cleaning agents can have a significant effect on your health, compounded by the huge amounts of waste plastic bottles in our oceans and landfills – we must adopt more sustainable ways to clean.

Chemical-free cleaning has a multitude of benefits for both the user and the planet. There are a number of sustainable solutions already out there, one of which is Toucan Eco which makes electrochemical activated (ECA) water.

What is ECA water?

When a small electrical current is applied to a salt and water solution, the hydrogen and oxygen in the water react with the chloride in the salt to produce hypochlorous acid, and with the sodium to produce sodium hypochlorite. This process is known as electrochemical activation, or ECA.

Hypochlorous acid is a powerful, safe and naturally occurring disinfectant. Sodium hypochlorite acts as a cleaning solution. When the body comes under attack from invading bacteria and viruses, the immune system responds by sending white blood cells, which produces the very same hypochlorous acid to fight the infection. This technology is inspired by our very own immune system, creating the same, naturally occurring and safe solution, but in a more concentrated form.

Creating a more sustainable future

ECA water started to be used as a chemical-free cleaner and disinfectant in industrial applications in the 1970s. With developments in technology, new smaller and more portable devices have been designed that allow the solution to be made on demand and onsite.

It’s completely safe and non-hazardous to humans or animals. Stringent tests have been undertaken by research universities. They’ve shown it is highly effective against all types of bacteria such as viruses, cysts and protozoa. It’s also proven to effectively wipe out algae and spores in water supplies, on surfaces and in fabrics and materials. Tests have also shown that the solution kills up to 99.999% of microorganisms, including pathogens.

This technology is trusted by a huge range of industries around the world. It protects the marine environment, disinfects drinking water, combats Legionella, and is used to safely disinfect and clean in everything from fish processing to carpet cleaning, salad packing to flower cultivation and dairy farming.

The applications for Toucan Eco are endless. And it’s now being used by the cleaning industry in restaurants, schools, nurseries, universities, government buildings and has even been enlisted by the British Army. It is used to clean workplaces such as Geneva and Copenhagen airports, NHS Blood & Transplant Service, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Volvo’s commercial haulage vehicles and more.

The Toucan Eco range

Different models are available to suit virtually any application and because you make it yourself, you’ll never run out. It only costs as much as the water and salt and uses about a 10th of the electricity that a household kettle does, while eradicating plastic waste from unnecessary chemical cleaning agents.

The activated solution is certified safe as a general disinfectant and safe for food preparation areas. It’s also certified as effective for use in risk areas. Toucan Eco is listed under Article 95 of the EU Biocides regulations. It’s non-toxic and non-allergic so there’s less risk to health, less health and safety training with no COSHH implications and costs less over time.

On top of that, there’s no servicing or reordering and it will contribute towards reducing your business’ carbon footprint.
