NSS Maintenance Teams Rise to an Unprecedented Challenge

Keeping businesses running through Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin
When an unprecedented series of storms created major disruption for businesses, the specialist teams at NSS rose to the challenge to make sure buildings could stay open safely.
The UK had never seen more than two named storms in a week before February 2022, when Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin all hit in the space of five days.
And with virtually no time to recover between each storm, NSS maintenance specialists worked round the clock to minimise the damage.

In the midst of Storm Eunice, the worst of the three, a team of 115 full-time engineers worked to repair gutters, replace glass windows and reinforce damaged building frames.

‘A remarkable response’
Phil Seaton, Operations Director for Maintenance, paid tribute to the teams dealing with problems all over the country, as well as the on-call managers and support staff who helped coordinate the effort.
“We pride ourselves on fast response times and these storms have really tested us,” he said.
“But our teams have been fantastic, working day and night to make sure damage is kept to a minimum and customers can keep trading. Everyone, from contact centre managers to on-site engineers, has been facing incredible pressure, and their response has been remarkable.”

NSS teams responded to nearly 300 callouts from all over the UK over the course of four days. In most cases, the priority was to keep the building open and the client trading. That meant fast fixes to roofs in particular, with fully trained and equipped teams able to carry out the work quickly before making plans for longer-term repairs.

And with all of this taking place in the midst of ongoing storms and flooding, extra care had to be taken to keep everyone involved safe. Weather conditions were continuously monitored and wind speeds were assessed to make sure equipment could be safely deployed.

The result was an efficient, well-coordinated response that kept damage to a minimum and ensured NSS clients could continue trading despite the some of the worst storms in years.
