As the name suggests, the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology is capable of extracting textual information from vehicle registration plates from the images taken using CCTV or cameras installed for enforcing road-rules or any other dedicated camera installed for the task.
To ensure the images taken during low-light conditions are clear enough for the ANPR system to accurately extract information from the images, infrared lighting is built-in cameras entrusted with the capturing images for the task.
Based on optical character recognition, the ANPR is optimised to function according to the variation in registration plate designs in numerous regions. Although ANPR was invented by the UK’s Police Scientific Development Branch in 1976, however the technology couldn’t be optimised for mass scale adoption until innovation rationalised costs associated with software use during 1990s.
